Madonna sat down with BuzzFeed to play a game in which she was prompted with 10 different people or things and had to write down the first word that came to her mind. Apparently she doesn't like germ-ridden guacamole, and she joked that Jell-O shots are a "white trash sport."
But two responses in particular garnered the most attention. When she was prompted with "Putin," she responded with "gay."

The same thing happened when she was given the word "kale."

The responses did not sit well with some BuzzFeed readers. "I am surprised she is using the word 'gay' as an insult. I thought she was more sensitive than that," one commenter wrote.
The conversation also made it to Twitter, where users had varying opinions.

Madonna doesn't get to throw around gay as a perjorative any more than anyone else, thanks.

Where delicious kale puts its juicy stalk is none of Madonna's business. RT @lilsheba "Madonna calls kale ?gay? in a word association game"

Some people are properly homophobic, take issue with them. Not people who have used their global voice to support gay rights forever #Madonna

It should be noted that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly been in the news for his country's anti-gay legislation. There have also been rumors that the Russian leader may be "latently gay."
As for BuzzFeed, the site responded to the kale issue by "interviewing" the leafy green on Thursday. "Yep, I'm gay," was its response.
