"Fast Five" Cruises to Box Office Glory

Speeding away from the pack, "Fast Five" easily took hold of the top spot at the box office on Friday (April 29) and never looked back.

The Vin Diesel/Jordana Brewster lead action flick cranked out $34.4 million in earnings on opening day en route to an approximate weekend take of $83.6 million.

With a huge dropoff between first and second place films, the runner-up turned out to be the Anne Hathaway bird-based animated picture "Rio" - which pulled in $14.4 million in its third week of release.

Rounding out the top five were Tyler Perry's "Madea's Big Happy Family" ($10 million), "Water For Elephant ($9.1 million) and the Disney picture "Prom" - which failed to meet expectations by garnering an estimated $5 million during its first three days in theaters.
