Spike Lee Takes On 'Lame' NYTimes Film Critic In Ongoing Gentrification Battle
Spike Lee's war with the New York Times over gentrification isn't going away any time soon: after the paper's head film critic AO Scott took on the subject through a cinematic lens, Lee fired off an epic riposte through social media.
Scott's article was just the latest in an ongoing conversation centered around gentrification in Brooklyn, dialogue that was thrust into the forefront anew after Lee was recorded publicly railing against a previous piece in the Times that suggested gentrification has spurred positive effects for the borough. That audio was first published in The Daily Intelligencer and went viral.
On Sunday, Scott published what Lee took to be a dig. "Whose Brooklyn Is It Anyway? Tracing Urban Change in Brooklyn From 'Kotter' To 'Girls'" read, in part:
The director's open letter, which was published the following day via the social media platform WhoSay to -- to eschew outside edits, Lee said -- criticized Scott's piece as a "lame, weak, not really thought out" argument that attempts to portray Lee as a hypocrite.
Since Lee's post was published on Monday, Scott took to Twitter to respond:
Scott's piece did largely paraphrase another article published in The New York Daily News, in which it was actually NY1's Errol Louis who took aim at the director for calling out gentrifers, when Scott himself had moved to the affluent neighborhood of the Upper East Side.
Nevertheless, Lee's letter concludes with an exhortation to Scott: "Mr. Scott, please learn 'SPREADIN? LOVE IS THE BROOKLYN WAY.' WAKE UP WE BEEN HERE."

What?s the saying about people who live in glass brownstones? Nearly everyone who brings up gentrification is implicated in some way, and accusations of hypocrisy on Mr. Lee?s part were not long in coming. In a Daily News op-ed article, Errol Louis noted that Mr. Lee currently lives in the old-money oasis of the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and also that when he lived in Brooklyn, he was both an agent and a beneficiary of the gentrification he now decries. Mr. Lee?s presence in Fort Greene in the 1990s ? as an artist, an entrepreneur and a celebrity ? contributed in no small measure to that area?s cachet. Fort Greene was colonized by successive waves of interlopers: bohemians and creative class types; recent graduates and fledgling families; bankers and lawyers.

You stated in your Article that because I live in The Upper East Side and I?m talking about Gentrification that makes me Hypocrite. The fact is where I live has nothing to do with it. Your argument is OKEY DOKE. If you did your research you would see I?m a product of The New York Public School System, from Kindergarten to graduating from John Dewey High School in Coney Island. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia and my Family moved to Crown Heights, Brooklyn when I was Three. The Lees were the 1st Black Family to move into the predominantly Italian-American Brooklyn Neighborhood of Cobble Hill. My Parents bought their first home in 1968, a Brownstone in Fort Greene, where my Father still lives. Did you know his and a Next door Neighbor?s Brownstone were vandalized by Graffiti after my remarks on Gentrification at Pratt Institute? Curious you left that out of your article.

Britney Spears Offered $10 Million To Join 'X Factor'

<P>Simon Cowell has hinted that he wants to reload the judges panel on "X Factor" with two new women and according to reports, he's close to landing a superstar who might make the second season of his talent contest much more interesting. </P><P> </P><P>While names including Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey have been bandied about as possible replacements for <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul,</a>
 the buzz has continued to focus on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>. After a few rough professional and personal years, Aguilera has gone a long way toward reclaiming her A-list status thanks to the success of her performance on "The Voice." </P><P> </P><P>Cowell reportedly reached out personally to Spears to get the conversation rolling and he's been talking her up lately, saying in that same conference call, "are we flattered there would be interest from Britney Spears? Yes." In a later interview, he said he was "fascinated" with Spears and praised her resilience after a rough period during which she endured some very public personal struggles. </P><P> </P><P>Jackson's name was in the hopper until recently, when she revealed that, while flattered by the offer, the TV gig just would not jibe with the <a href="/news/articles/1680297/x-factor-janet-jackson.jhtml">professional commitments</a>

Tip confirms second remix in the works for track, which previously featured a remix verse from Andre 3000.

Now, a few more rappers want to get dirty with the glittery pop singer. </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2011/10/t-i-andre-300-lil-wayne-wiz-khalifa-record-kesha-remix" target="_blank">XXLmag.com</a> reports that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/t_i_/artist.jhtml">T.I.</a> plans to jump on the track, and Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa will also be joining Andre and Tip on a new version of "Sleazy." </P><P> </P><P>Weezy should be a welcome addition to <a href="/news/articles/1651081/keha-gets-sleazy-on-new-cannibal-track.jhtml">Ke$ha's dance tune</a>, as it sounds somewhat like Wayne's single "A Milli." And while not much else is known about the remix, T.I. promised that he's going to go big with his verse. </P><P> </P><P>"I haven't heard anybody but mine. ... I'm gonna put my money on mine," the newly freed rapper, who <a href="/news/articles/1671950/ti_prison-release.jhtml">ended an 11-month prison sentence</a> in September, told the website. </P><P> </P><P>The Andre 3000 remix dropped earlier this year and appears on K-Dollar Sign's album <i>Cannibal.</i> The guys will have a lot of swagger to compete with because when Andre appeared on the first remix, he had this to say: "We start out so cute in our baby pictures/ That mama shot for our daddy so that he wouldn't forget you/ He forgot anyway, but hey, one day he'll remember/ If not, he's human, I'm human, you human, we'll forgive him/ I call her Keisha, she like it because it's 'hood to her/ She call me Andre 6000 because I'm good to her." </P><P> </P><P>Tip told XXLmag.com that his appearance on the Ke$ha song is just one of many remixes he's amped about. He has also worked on remixes for Meek Mill and Rick Ross's "Ima Boss," as well as Jay-Z and Kanye West's <i>Watch the Throne</i> song "N---as in Paris." </P><P> </P><P>"I'm looking for some more records to jump on," he said. "That's what I'm doin' right now. I'm commandeering hit records right now. I'm hijacking hit records. Shailene Woodley Wows On 'Divergent' Red Carpet, Makes Us Consider Eating Clay
Shaliene Woodley looked absolutely stunning, when she walked the red carpet for the UK Premiere of "Divergent" on Sunday, March 30.
The 22-year-old actress looked happy, immediately hugging co-star Theo James, when she spotted him at the event.
Outside of her starring role in the "Divergent" franchise, Woodley has made headlines with her interesting beauty routine.
Her "alternative lifestyle," is said to include getting her food directly from a farm, giving her "vagina a little extra vitamin D" and eating clay.
"I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver," she told Into The Gloss, " ... so, I've discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn?t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes."
Anyways, she looks fantastic, so at least one of those "alternative lifestyle" tactics is working.

<P>As <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> settles into the role of <a href="/news/articles/1677997/beyonce-motherhood-business.jhtml">motherhood</a>, she's attached to another role — this one for the big screen. The pop singer is reportedly in talks to join Ryan Murphy's latest flick. </P><P> </P><P>Billed as "One Hit Wonders," the film would be a musical comedy that could potentially star B's pal Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz and "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg. </P><P> </P><P>The film would follow Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz as pop stars who hit it big in the '90s as — you guessed it — one-hit wonders. In order to gain back some of the pop-star recognition they once had, the ladies join forces and form a supergroup. Samberg and his Lonely Island team would be involved in coming up with the movie's songs. Beyoncé's role is still unknown. </P><P> </P><P>The "Glee" creator would direct and co-write the screenplay with his frequent collaborators, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. He's expected to begin work on it after his big-screen adaptation of the play "The Normal Heart." <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/02/ryan-murphy-plans-one-hit-wonders-with-gwyneth-paltrow-reese-witherspoon-cameron-diaz-beyonce-and-andy-samberg/" target="_blank">Deadline</a> reports that the film's idea came after Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz dined with Murphy at New York hotspot Soho House and they all wanted to work on a fun project together. The pitch to Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal was reportedly scooped up in 10 minutes. Deals are currently being worked out. </P><P> </P><P>MTV News' email to Murphy's rep had not been returned by press time. </P><P> </P><P>Regardless of how this film shakes out, Beyoncé is reportedly already thinking about her music career again. Producer Ryan Tedder shared that the singer is prepping several <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/14/beyonce-prepping-two-new-albums">follow-up albums</a> to <a href="/news/articles/1665479/beyonce-4-leak.jhtml">2011's <i>4.</i></a> </P><P> </P><P>"The conversations about her next album literally just started and there [are] two projects happening. All I can say is, you kind of feed her the best that you have, and she's this phenomenal filter and she takes it all in." Mark Wahlberg: Slimed Host at 2014 Kids? Choice Awards
Looking forward to a fun and exciting evening, Mark Wahlberg cleaned up nicely for the 2014 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards earlier tonight (March 29).
His spiffy clothes were eventually covered in slime as his hosting duties continued throughout that evening at Los Angeles' Galen Center.
As for the show, Selena Gomez took home the orange blimp for Favorite Female Singer.
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. scored the prize for Best Male Buttkicker. During his speech, he said, "This is the highest honor yet bestowed upon me. Life has kicked my proverbial butt...until one day I decided to start kicking back."

Kony 2012 Campaign Catches Eyes Of Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga
Campaign aims to bring African militia leader Joseph Kony to justice for war crimes and for enlisting children as soldiers.

<P>A campaign to stop the nearly 30-year, brutal rule of African militia leader Joseph Kony became a viral sensation this week. <a href="http://kony2012.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com" target="_blank">"Kony 2012,"</a> started by the group Invisible Children, aims to make Kony's face so famous that authorities will finally be able to arrest him and try him for his crimes. </P><P> </P><P>A 30-minute <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc" target="_blank">documentary</a> released on Monday is one of the keys to the campaign, and as of Thursday it had gotten more than 26 million views. The video details the atrocities carried out by Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army. The campaign appears to be working, as at one point on Wednesday, Invisible Children and #stopkony were trending higher on Twitter than Peyton Manning or the new iPad. </P><P> </P><P>Since 1987, human rights officials say Kony has forcefully abducted more than 60,000 children to be soldiers in his army and reportedly raped, mutilated and killed civilians in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan and displaced more than 2 million people. The leader is wanted for committing atrocities by the International Criminal Court and is being hunted down by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African nations, according to the <a href="http://bit.ly/AyrDyz"><I>Associated Press.</I></a> </P><P> </P><P>Kony 2012 is an effort to capture Kony and disarm the LRA before a reported window of opportunity closes. One way it plans to do that is by encouraging users to directly message a variety of stars to make use of their Twitter ubiquity to get the word out. Among those listed on the site are: Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Jay-Z, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Ryan Seacrest and Ellen DeGeneres, along with a number of major policymakers. </P><P> </P><P>When users click on the celebs' photos, a tweet pops up that reads: Help us end #LRA violence. On Thursday, it was confirmed that the high-profile couple filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to <a href="/news/articles/1678877/beyonce-jay-z-blue-ivy-trademark.jhtml">trademark Blue Ivy's name</a>. The patent is intended to prevent the use of their daughter's name by non-related parties. Liam Neeson opened up about his life after the death of his wife, Natasha Richardson, of raising teenage boys as a single father, on drugs and drinking, how the Woody Allen scandal of the 1990s exploded while he was the set of Allen’s ‘Husbands and Wives,’ why he gave up the role of ‘Lincoln,’ and more in a wide-ranging interview for a GQ magazine cover story. The 61-year-old Liam Neeson spoke with candor in his recollections of the past few decades of his career for GQ magazine’s cover. While he did not weigh in on the allegations of sexual molestation which Dylan Farrow, Allen’s adopted daughter has written about recently, he spoke about the Woody Allen scandal from an interesting vantage point as he was an actor on the set of ‘Husbands and Wives’ when the catalyst of the scandal first broke. He spoke of a sex scene he and actress Judy Davis were embroiled in that day, “There?s a scene where I?m going down on Judy Davis, right. Matthew McConaughey's Alleged Old ID Surfaces Online
The Internet is just full of surprises. After surfacing Matthew McConaughey's prom photo as soon as he won his Best Actor Oscar, this latest treat might even be better: McConaughey's alleged old ID, which Reddit is showing all the love to today.
Under the title "My buddy's fake ID. Used to get into 18+ shows in the early 90s," redditor Philkolons explains that, "This gem was passed off to my friend outside Emo's in Austin circa 1992-3. Alright alright alright."
So what might have happened to McConaughey's ID for it to have traveled all the way to the top of Reddit? The date of birth is accurate, the photo clearly seems spot on, even the address is the 44-year-old's home address.
As one Huffington Post editor who is familiar with Emo's in Austin, Texas, notes, the music venue was open to all ages. McConaughey might have gotten his ID confiscated trying to buy a drink underage (as the alarming red UNDER 21 stamp suggests), or he lost it, gave it away or left it at the bar, and someone else got hold of it. Whatever the path, it somehow changed hands until Philkolons' friend discovered it.
Given that McConaughey didn't become famous until 1996 with "A Time To Kill," the unnamed friend probably didn't know whose ID he was using at the time.
Curiously enough, the ID's expiration date seems to be 1991, which would have likely made it difficult to use in '92-'93.
We'll settle for staring at that familiar grin, in any case.
