Lady Gaga Responds To Born This Way Topping 'Pretentious Albums' List

'Eye roll,' Gaga tweets after music mag NME blasts her latest LP.
By James Montgomery

Earlier this week, British music mag <a href="http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=1&title=the_most_pretentious

_albums_ever&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1" target="_blank">NME set out to determine the "10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever." The list includes (genuinely pretty terrible) conceptual fare like Kiss' Music From "The Elder," Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music and, uh, Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which somehow bested all competitors to nab the #1 spot.

How? Well, as NME writer Priya Elan wrote, "On Born This Way, [Gaga] seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy 'anthems' that couldn't mask the fact that the fun had left the building." Elan singled out the thumping "Scheiße" as BTW's most pretentious moment, adding, "Did electroclash die for this?"

Snap. As you'd probably expect, those jabs had Gaga's Little Monsters on the offensive, and they launched an all-out attack on Elan in the comments section of NME's website. But Gaga herself remained above the fray — for a while, anyway.

On Thursday night, she took to her <a

href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/172828595134267392" target="_blank">Twitter account to hit back at NME, a publication that's certainly been no stranger to charges of pretentiousness over the years.

"Oh the irony of winning 'Most Pretentious Album Ever' from none other than NME. *Eye roll,*" Gaga wrote. "I might laugh forever [and] then return to narcissism."

Double snap. Having sufficiently eye-rolled her way through the situation, there's been no further comment from Gaga about the list.

NME, of course, has since turned the exchange into a separate story, one which, for whatever reason (word count?), includes recent comments Gaga made about bulimia ... and spaghetti. *Eye roll.*

Britney Spears' Big 2011: From A Smash Album To A Ring On Her Finger

A decade into her career, the pop megastar reinvented herself this year as the ultimate Femme Fatale and made a big commitment to Jason Trawick.
By Jocelyn Vena

Maybe Britney Spears' lucky number is 30. The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned the Best Britney Video of All Time. But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career.

For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a Femme Fatale, giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it's probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, just behind Lil Wayne.

"When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative," she recalled in the MTV special "I Am the Femme Fatale." "That's when my mom realized I'm a really creative person."

She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. From "Hold It Against Me" to "Till the World Ends" to her Chris Marrs Piliero-directed "I Wanna Go" and "Criminal," Britney made headlines every time she dropped a music video. But no vid stirred up as much controversy as her "Criminal" clip, which featured real-life boyfriend (now fiancé) Jason Trawick — and his abs.

"At the end of the day, Jason killed it," Piliero told MTV News of Trawick's cameo. "That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was."

Between video shoots, Spears hit the road with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Joe Jonas, and DJ Pauly D. Spears fully embraced her sensuality on the Femme Fatale Tour, a spectacular show full of costume changes, elaborate stage setups and stunning mini-films.

And while much of the 2011 VMA buzz was about Beyoncé's baby bump and Jo Calderone, Spears stole the spotlight by walking away with a Moonman for Best Pop Video and the prized Video Vanguard Award. She also had tongues wagging after an onstage kiss from Jo (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), just before she was honored with an electrifying dance tribute that highlighted some of biggest career moments.

"It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect," Spears told us backstage at the VMAs. "The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!' "

As 2011 came to a close, Spears wrapped up her tour, and MTV News threw her a birthday bash in the form of the "30 Videos for 30 Years" tournament. The competition was heated but in the end, Spears' iconic "I'm a Slave 4 U" took home the prize. And just when it seemed things couldn't get any better, Britney confirmed she was engaged to Trawick after dating for two years. She showed off her Neil Lane ring during a celebratory weekend in Las Vegas.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Single Is 'Definitely Edgier'

Producer/songwriter tells MTV News the 'sexier' track, which drops Monday, will 'definitely surprise people.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber is days away from dropping his lead Believe single, "Boyfriend," and its early buzz grew even louder on Wednesday when Bieber released the lyrics for the track. While fans will have to wait until Monday to hear the song, MTV News got a little bit of a tease from one of the guys who worked with the teen sensation on the track.

"This record is different in a very good way," "BF" co-producer and co-writer Mason Levy told MTV News. "Definitely edgier, it's more grown-up, it's more developed and it's sexier. It's just like really dope. It's gonna definitely surprise people. People aren't really expecting that they're going to like it."

Levy thinks pretty much everyone is destined to like it, thanks to a sound that reaches far beyond that of Bieber's tweeny pop days. "It's more of something that everyone can drive around and listen to it, whether they're guys or girls or older," he said.

Bieber has said he wanted to grow up with this album and the Mike Posner-produced song. His model was the post-'NSYNC Justin Timberlake. From the sound of it, he might have hit that nail on the head.

"It's more just the verses [that he raps on] and the rest he's singing," he said. "It's dope. It's hip-hop, but with great acoustic R&B, pop guitar with very hip-hop, clubby drums and really dope Justin Timberlake-y melodies."

The creation of the song was pretty organic, Levy said. "We got together and started messing around. It was one of those things where you didn't have to struggle too much. It just kind of happened," he said. "He always goes in and does melodies and he's involved in lyrics and everything."

"Boyfriend" will set the tone for the album, set for release later this year. "There's definitely lots of diversity on the album. There's really ballad-y stuff and there's more stuff like this. I would say ['Boyfriend'] is harder," Levy added. "He's very open to everything."

Are you excited to hear a "grown-up" Bieber on "Boyfriend"? Leave your comment below!

Here's What Westeros Really Looks Like, According To George R.R. Martin

George R. R. Martin's next book is coming. No, not that one.

The author talked at 92Y in Manhattan on Sunday about "The World of Ice & Fire," his new book chronicling the history of Westeros. During the talk, Martin revealed that the Westeros portrayed on television's "Game of Thrones" can be gorgeous, but it's not always how he envisioned it would look.

"I wanted accurate versions of these castles. We?ve had a number of different artists draw them on covers and on the fantasy like cards and games, and some of them have been beautiful images but not necessarily accurate to what I described," Martin said of his vision for the world.

The author said for this new book, he worked closely with artists to make the images and locations match how he envisioned them in his "mind's eye."

Without further ado, here is how the world of "Game of Thrones" really looks.

The Iron Throne

In regard to how the throne has looked in the past, the author said, "It?s a great looking throne and it has become iconic, but it?s not really my Iron Throne ... In this book you?ll see my Iron Throne."

Winterfell

On artist Ted Nasmith's landscape work, Martin said, "I knew with Ted Naismith that we were getting one of the great landscape painters of the world really and a guy who does really great architectural work, so he and I worked very closely on these."

The Red Keep at King's Landing

When talking with the moderator about the Red Keep, Martin said the locations on the HBO show are beautiful, but none are exactly what he described in the book.

Castle Black at The Wall

Hadrian's Wall served as Martin's inspiration for creating his famous Wall. The author said visiting the wall gave him a "profound feeling" that he wanted to bring to life in his fantasy work.

Dragonstone

Martin said, "Dragonstone has been a bitch," when describing the difficulty in bringing it to life in art, but he described this rendition as the most accurate to what's in the books.

"The World of Ice & Fire" is available Tuesday, Oct. 28.
