'People Like Us' Is The Anti-Blockbuster, Chris Pine Says
'You can have 'The Avengers' and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller,' he tells MTV News.

If you've been following along with Chris Pine's movie career, the last few films in which he's appeared ("Star Trek," "This Means War," "Unstoppable") might lead you to believe that the man is only action/adventure-oriented. Not so, as demonstrated by his work in his latest film, "People Like Us," which revolves around a man who is tasked with delivering a $150,000 inheritance to a sister (Elizabeth Banks) he has never met.
MTV News recently sat down with Pine to discuss the unique tone and subject matter addressed in the film, which is based on the real-life experiences of its writing team, Alex Kurtzman (who also served as its director), Bob Orci and Jody Lambert, and is not necessarily the type of movie that big studios are gunning to green-light.
"Everyone I've talked to at the studio level who makes these decisions, it seems like it's become an even more bottom-line kind of industry, so movies like 'Paranormal Activity' or something that's made for $3 million and goes on to gross $200 million or the big tentpoles that have the big marketing machines behind it, those are the movies they have to make," Pine said about studios feeling pressured to churn out surefire blockbusters. "It's a real tribute to DreamWorks and to Steven Spielberg. First of all, Alex wrote a great script and as much as the business of show business can sometimes dominate at the end of the day, people in what we do, we love good stories, we are hungry for good stories," he explained of the selling point of "People Like Us." "I think if something like 'The Artist,' a silent film in black-and-white with French actors can do well. I think it's a great sign that in our times you can have both; you can have 'The Avengers' and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller."
Pine said what he hopes people will enjoy in watching "People Like Us" is the fact that it features realistic characters trying to solve realistic problems, in addition to its old-school dramedy vibe influenced by James L. Brooks and Cameron Crowe.
"Alex talks very much about his influences — Brooks, Cameron Crowe, obviously — we always talked about 'Ordinary People' and 'Kramer vs. Kramer.' What's great about those films, there's nothing hooking you other than hopefully a story about a family that you relate to because it looks very much like your own, so it doesn't necessarily mean these people have to go a great many places," he said. " 'Kramer vs. Kramer' is a great example. You get lost in the minutia of this world of a kid making waffles or was it pancakes? We'll have to look that up. That's the world Alex wanted to create. That was the joy, figuring out the everyday living of these characters."

As we reported earlier, Nadya Suleman has been raising a stink about a flight she and her manager took from California to NYC recently. But what really happened? The original story goes that the mother of multiples filed an official complaint with the airline, stating that she and her manager were singled out, harassed, and just plain picked on by flight staff for the airline. She then told TMZ that she was moved around to different parts of the airplane, and that her drinks were never brought to her. Her manager also says that she was kicked out of the bathroom. Part of her beef was that they were laughing at her and saying they knew who she was. Now we are hearing the airline’s side of things. They not only called the complaints a bunch of nonsense, but instead turned things around on Octo, saying: “(Nadya Suleman and her manager) had to be asked repeatedly to observe safety regulations.” The only thing that appears to be true about any of their complaint was that the manager was kicked out of the bathroom. Nora Ephron: A Big-Screen Love Letter
We fondly remember the cinematic legacy of the director/screenwriter who died Tuesday at the age of 71.

It couldn't have been more than six months ago that a male friend and I were engaged in an uncharacteristically earnest Gchat conversation about the genius of "When Harry Met Sally..." And as philosophical discussions of that sort often go, we couldn't help but wonder why they don't make romantic comedies like they used to. (Oh, the loathsome they: such a handy scapegoat!)
Of course, each generation is wont to think theirs did it best, but it was probably a curious conversation for us to be having considering we hadn't even finished the second grade when the film debuted in 1989. But our belated affinity for the film speaks volumes to the timelessness of a screenplay written by filmmaker Nora Ephron, who died Tuesday at the age of 71.
Ephron wasn't the first to ponder the oft-fraught friendships that develop between men and women, but her commentary on the subject remains among the most true. More than 20 years after Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) met and road-tripped from Chicago to New York City, the question of whether the "sex part" always gets in the way continues to be a favorite cinematic trope (see: "Friends With Benefits," "No Strings Attached"). But those efforts seem superfluous in the shadow of Ephron's Oscar-nominated achievement.
The New York-born writer was a journalist by trade, who made her foray into feature films with 1983's "Silkwood," which starred Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher. Ephron (along with co-screenwriter Alice Arlen) received her first of three Oscar noms for the biopic's script based on the life of Karen Silkwood, who died under suspicious circumstances while investigating the processing plant where she worked. Ephron penned a handful of dramatic screenplays (including a a few politically charged scripts that never saw the light of day), but it is her earnest romantic comedies that Ephron will always be remembered for.To wit, today's mostly treacly romantic romps make Ephron's films seem a revelation— and, thankfully, never once a rescue mission. Her female characters were never sad-sack spinsters whose only aim was to find a man. In fact, often time, such as in "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," the female protagonist was already in a relationship when a new one began to blossom with the real Mr. Right.
But if an Ephron heroine were ever to be considered in need of salvation, so too were her heroes: both equally formidable and equally flawed. In "Sleepless in Seattle," Meg Ryan's Annie, stuck in a lackluster relationship with Bill Pullman's Walter, was as much rescued by Tom Hanks' widowed Sam as she rescued him, bringing him back to life atop the twinkling Empire State Building.
Much of what made Ephron's characters so indelible was what came out of their mouths. The screenwriter exceled at witty, quippy dialogue that often beat with the quickened pulse of New York City (a frequent setting for her films). I mean, "I'll have what she's having"? Come on! And don't even get me started on Harry's proclamation of love to Sally. To this day, I can't even read the monologue without getting a little misty-eyed: "... And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." Of course, Ephron wasn't just a scribe but a keen director, who got the best out of her actors and understood the power of a Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks one-two punch. And in the end, she had no delusions about what her career was and wasn't, telling MTV News in a 2009 interview while promoting her final film, "Julie & Julia," that she never felt penned in by the romantic-comedy genre.
"I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want," Ephron said. "Fortunately, I'm not just in the movie business, so I don't feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make."
Fortunately for us, she was in the movie business, and she never once faked it.

Singer will drop Big Sean collabo, 'As Long as You Love Me,' in July.

Justin Bieber has officially picked his next single off Believe. The singer will release his Big Sean collabo, "As Long as You Love Me," to radio on July 9, Billboard.com reports.
The song is the first official follow-up to his single "Boyfriend" and has already seen some movement on the charts after Bieber released it as a promo single on June 11 in the lead-up to his June 19 album release. It charted at #21 on the Hot 100, banking 168,000 downloads. The song will get a major push on Top 40 and rhythmic radio stations in the coming weeks.
"Bieber's a true G. People may not know that," Big Sean told MTV News about working with the 18-year-old on the Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins-produced track. "He is a good dude, man. And I ain't toning down nothing. I'm diverse — I can write raps to any type of song."
MTV News recently chatted with Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, about the album's potential next single, and he shared that "As Long as You Love Me" was at the top of the list of candidates to get the official single treatment.
"We haven't picked the next single," he said. "We're gonna see how different songs react off the album. 'As Long as You Love Me' [with Big Sean] is getting a lot of love, so is 'All Around the World' [with Ludacris]. So is 'Die in Your Arms.' 'Beauty and the Beat' is coming with the album. We're gonna see what the next single is. We're gonna figure that out."
In addition to preparing to shoot a video for the track, Bieber is also still in promo mode, spreading the word about his album, as well as prepping for his world tour, which kicks off in September in the U.S.
"The tour starts at the end of September ... by the end of 2013 we're gonna hit the whole world," Braun explained. "He has been watching a tremendous amount of Michael Jackson concerts from the '80s and '90s. And he has been talking to me about how Michael incorporated magic and pyro and reveals and he wants to bring in that. [But] still do that acoustic thing, but he wants to take it to a whole new level.
"It's just really exciting," he continued. "Nothing makes him happier than being onstage. So it's gonna be fun to get back onto the road. I think he was an amazing performer before, but his level of dance and musicianship and his range [has grown]. He's a veteran now. I think he wants to take it to a completely new level."

Beyonce, Lil Wayne Inspire NiRe AllDai's 'Boss-Bitch-Behavior'

<P>Performing at the International Dance Music Awards in Miami in March and launching her first music video for her club single <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_VcKTkY4Vk" target="_blank">"Inside Out"</a> are just two of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter NiRé AllDai's endeavors since first stepping out as an artist. Her journey, which today sees her selecting songs — including tracks produced by Timbaland and the Stargate camp — for her upcoming debut album, actually began as a writer for other producers and artists.</P><P>"I've always been an artist," NiRé told MTV News. "But my manager was like, 'Let's work this [writer] angle,' and it worked well because I was able to build a lot of really great relationships with dope producers who ended up helping me on my project."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="NiRé AllDai Readies Debut Album" id="vid:789067" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"I did a first single for Starshell, who was Mary J. Blige's first artist, and the single was called 'SuperLuva' [produced by Fernando Garibay]," NiRé continued. "I had a chance to write with Mary and Swizz [Beatz] and Timbaland and Dr. Dre, who's a really good friend of mine."</P><P>After getting her writing chops up, meeting the right management and finding her A&R at Capitol Records, NiRé was ready to give it her all for a chance to perform for the masses. Her fearlessness, fashion and electricity are depicted vividly in her video for "Inside Out," which was directed by <a href="http://londonalley.com/?director=hannah-lux-davis" target="_blank">Hannah Lux Davis</a>, who also directed videos for Shinedown and Anjulie, among others. NiRé is inspired by some of music's biggest, baddest stars, included among them Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a>.</P><P>"Beyoncé is the perfect example of what a solo artist should strive for," NiRé said. "If you want to be like 'boss-bitch-behavior'! When I'm in the gym and I'm tired and can't go anymore, I'm like, 'What would Beyoncé do?' She wouldn't stop."</P><P>NiRé AllDai will release her second club single, "Hella Bad," soon, with a radio single to follow. She plans to release her as-yet-untitled debut album sometime this year, and she also has her fingers crossed for another, long-awaited opportunity.</P><P>"I've been looking forward to the <i>Detox,</i> [album]' NiRé said. A week after giving birth to her first child, Molly Sims and her hubby, Scott Stuber, have finally revealed the name of their newborn son!
As for their choice, the supermodel's rep confirmed that the pair have decided to call their little prince Brooks Alan Stuber.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Sims and Stuber welcomed their seven pound boy back on June 19, a moment in which Molly called the "Happiest Day of My Life!."
In other personal news, the 39 year-old recently shared some insight with her fans and Twitter followers about what helps keep herself and her family in tip top shape.
The blonde beauty wrote on Tuesday (June 26), "Believe it or not, people are always asking me what?s in my fridge! Well here?s my answer?" In a video posted on her website, Molly gives fans a sneak peek inside her fridge and explains that a couple of her pantry must haves include, Kale chips, cayenne pepper and chia seeds."
